Lexus Announces Intention to Recall Certain Vehicles to Replace Engine Valve Springs

Lexus announced that it has informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of its intention to file a Defect Information Report (DIR) regarding approximately 138,000 Lexus vehicles, powered by 4.6 and 5.0 liter V8 and 3.5 liter V6 engines in certain 2006, 2007 and 2008 GS, IS and LS models in the U.S. The formal report will be filed the week of July 5.

In the covered vehicles, due to slight variations during the manufacturing process, some foreign material may have contaminated a small number of the valve springs. If a vehicle is affected, there is a remote possibility that abnormal engine noise or idling may occur. In extremely rare instances, the engine may stop while the vehicle is in operation.

Lexus estimates that the likelihood of a customer vehicle experiencing this condition is two-tenths of one percent (0.2 %). Lexus has received no reports of accidents or injuries related to this condition. No vehicles from the current 2010 model year nor 2009 are affected.

Lexus will send owners of the involved vehicles a recall notification via first class mail. Owners are requested to contact their local Lexus dealer for diagnosis and repair after receiving their notification. The repair will involve replacement of the engine's valve springs at no charge.

Owners can continue to drive their vehicles. If symptoms are noticed, such as vibration, rough idling, unusual engine sounds or poor performance, the vehicle should be brought to a Lexus dealer for service.

Lexus Announces Intent to Conduct a Voluntary Safety Recall on Certain 2010 Lexus HS 250h Models

A statement from Mark Templin, Lexus Group Vice President and General Manager, June 25, 2010

"We want to assure our customers that their safety and satisfaction are our top priorities. We take the NHTSA's test results very seriously and appreciate the NHTSA bringing its concerns to our attention. Our engineers conducted similar testing during the development of the new HS 250h and the vehicle performed safely. While we are investigating and vigorously working to understand the different test results, we have stopped delivery of the involved vehicles. As soon as the issue is better understood and/or a remedy is developed, we will contact every owner.

Customers who have any questions or concerns should contact their local Lexus dealer or Lexus Customer Satisfaction at 1-800-25LEXUS or 1-800-255-3987."

Below you'll find answers to some of your questions.

1. What is the condition?

As part of its annual compliance testing program, NHTSA recently conducted an FMVSS 301 compliance test of a 2010 model year HS 250h vehicle. The test involves striking the subject vehicle from the rear at 80 km/h (approximately 50 mph). The vehicle is struck by a moving deformable barrier with a 70 percent overlap. Following the impact, the test vehicle is rotated on its longitudinal axis to each successive increment of 90o. During the rotation, the vehicle exhibited fuel spillage which exceeded the requirement of the standard.

It is important to note that during vehicle development, Lexus conducted testing utilizing the same protocol. The Lexus tests showed the vehicles fully comply with the FMVSS 301. We are working to understand the different results.

2. What is the cause of this condition?

Lexus is currently in the process of investigating and it would be premature to comment until the investigation has been completed.

3. Have there been any reports of incidents related to this issue involving the HS 250h?

Lexus is not aware of any accidents involving this issue.

4. How many Lexus HS 250h vehicles have been sold that are being investigated?

Approximately 13,000 model year 2010 Lexus HS 250h vehicles have been sold in the United States. (Note: Approximately 17,000 vehicles have been manufactured.)

5. Are there any other Lexus or Toyota vehicles involved?

No, there are no other Lexus or Toyota vehicles covered by the Noncompliance Information Report.

6. What is FMVSS 301?

FMVSS 301 is entitled "Fuel system integrity." It establishes performance requirements to protect against fuel leaks following a crash.

7. What is Lexus going to do?

Lexus is working to identify the reason for the different test results and to identify the cause of the noncompliance. At the present time, Lexus has not identified a remedy for this noncompliance, but it is working hard to do so promptly. As soon as a remedy is developed, Lexus will notify owners of covered vehicles by first-class mail.

8. When will the investigation be completed?

Lexus is working hard to complete its investigation, but at this time it cannot be certain when it will be completed.

9. Can vehicles in dealer inventory be delivered?

As required by Federal law, dealers are not to deliver any new vehicles in their inventory which are covered by this NCIR until remedied.

10. What if customers have questions or safety concerns regarding this issue, should they go to their dealer?

If customers have any concerns at all, they should feel free to contact the Lexus Customer Assistance Center (1-800-255-3987).

Lexus Voluntary Safety Recall on Select 2009 and 2010 LS Models

On May 21, 2010, Lexus announced it will conduct a voluntary safety recall on approximately 3,800 Lexus late 2009 and certain 2010 model year LS 460 and LS 600h L vehicles in the U.S. equipped with Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) to address a temporary steering wheel off-center condition that may develop under a specific driving maneuver. No other Toyota, Lexus, or Scion vehicles are involved in this recall.

Lexus Announces Safety Recall for Select 2009 and 2010 LS 460, LS 460 L and LS 600h L Models

A statement from Mark Templin, Lexus Group Vice President and General Manager, May 21, 2010

"To help assure our customers that their safety and satisfaction are our top priorities, Lexus has identified a condition in which some 2009 and 2010 LS models have experienced a brief off-center position of the steering wheel when it is turned to the extreme right or left position and re-centered, but corrects itself within a few seconds as the vehicle is driven. There have been no reported accidents or injuries related to this condition in the U.S., and no other Lexus models are involved in this recall.

We have developed a remedy that will be quickly put into place to help address customer concerns. We will be notifying owners of involved 2009 and 2010 LS models to modify the Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) system, and Lexus dealers will be contacting owners shortly to set up appointments.

Our dealers will service customers' vehicles as quickly and conveniently as possible by providing remote repairs and pick-up and delivery service, and fueling and washing customer cars. We will provide a courtesy vehicle to anyone who has purchased a 2009 or 2010 LS requiring this modification and has concerns about driving it until the work has been completed.

Customers who have any questions or concerns should contact their local Lexus dealer or Lexus Customer Satisfaction at 1-800-25LEXUS or 1-800-255-3987."

Below you'll find answers to some of your questions.

1. Which models is Lexus recalling, and how many vehicles are affected?

Lexus is recalling approximately 3,800 specific late 2009 and certain 2010 model year Lexus LS 460 and LS 600h L vehicles in the U.S. to address an issue with the Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) system.

2. What is the condition that prompted Lexus to take this action?

On certain Lexus vehicles equipped with VGRS, under certain limited driving circumstances the steering wheel may temporarily become off-centered. In extreme conditions, it can be off-center by a maximum of up to 90 degrees.

If the steering wheel is fully turned in one direction to the end of its travel (full lock position) and then very quickly turned in the opposite direction, the driver may observe that the center position of the steering wheel is temporarily off-centered. The VGRS system will self-correct the steering wheel off-center condition as the vehicle is driven for a few seconds (approximately five seconds).

Due to the limited circumstances in which this can occur, this condition will not occur during normal driving, such as lane changes or turning left or right at intersections.

3. What is a Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) system?

The VGRS system enhances the relationship between the amount the steering wheel must turn and the reaction of the vehicle's front wheels, which varies depending on the situation. For example, VGRS increases the gear ratio at high speeds to make handling less sensitive and twitchy. It can also lower its gear ratio to make less turning of the steering wheel necessary while maneuvering at slow speeds.

4. What can drivers do to prevent this condition from occurring?

Until the remedy has been completed on the vehicle, drivers can take the following steps to minimize the likelihood that this condition will occur:

  • When turning left or right at sharp intersections, when making a tight u-turn, or when parallel parking the vehicle, the steering wheel may reach the end of travel (full lock position). If this occurs, the driver should slowly turn the steering wheel back in the opposite direction and slowly exit the turn.
  • If possible, avoid quickly turning the steering wheel in the opposite direction, especially if the steering wheel was turned to the end of travel (full lock position).
  • Do not attempt to duplicate this condition.

5. What action should drivers take if they experience this condition?

If the driver notices an apparent steering wheel off-center condition when driving straight, he or she should carefully steer the vehicle and not make any sudden maneuvers. Steering should be based on the vehicle direction of travel rather than the steering wheel position. The VGRS will correct the steering wheel off-center condition automatically (approximately five seconds). The driver may notice this correction as the steering wheel center moves slowly by itself to the center position when driving straight during the correction operation.

If the driver notices that the vehicle does not go straight even though the steering wheel is in the centered position, the driver should make the necessary steering corrections so the vehicle will go straight or in the path intended.

6. How many customer complaints did you receive to prompt this action?

Lexus recently received one customer report in the U.S. regarding this condition and has received no reports of any accidents or injuries.

7. What is Lexus doing to address this issue?

As soon as the remedy parts are available, Lexus will begin sending notification letters by first-class mail to owners of the involved vehicles. The letter will advise owners to bring their vehicle to a Lexus dealer to have the Steering Control computer replaced with a newly designed one at no charge.

8. Will customers have to pay any money out of pocket for this repair?

No. The Steering Control computer will be replaced with a newly designed one at no charge.

9. Is it safe to continue driving my vehicle until the update becomes available?

Lexus believes that the involved vehicles are safe to drive. If the driver notices an apparent steering wheel off-center condition when driving straight, he or she should carefully steer the vehicle and not make any sudden maneuvers.

10. Are any other Toyota or Lexus vehicles affected by this recall?

No other Lexus, Toyota or Scion vehicles in the North American market are involved in this Safety Recall.

11. What should customers do if they still have questions or concerns?

Owners with questions or concerns are asked to contact their local Lexus dealer for diagnosis and repair, if applicable. Owners may also contact the Lexus Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-255-3987 Monday through Friday 5:00 am to 6:00 pm, or Saturday 7:00 am through 4:00 pm Pacific Standard Time.

2010 Lexus GX 460 Passes Consumer Reports' Retest – "Don't Buy" Label Lifted

A statement from Mark Templin, Lexus Group Vice President and General Manager, May 7, 2010

“We're pleased that Consumer Reports announced this morning that they are lifting the Don't Buy: Safety Risk designation from the 2010 Lexus GX 460 after the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) update addressed their prior concern.

CR said they made an appointment to have the update performed at the Lexus dealership from which they had anonymously bought the vehicle. Following that, CR stated that their engineers again put the updated 2010 GX 460 through the full series of emergency handling tests. CR said they did not experience any safety concerns with the updated GX 460 in their handling tests.

Lexus dealers began contacting customers as soon as details for the VSC update were available. Virtually all of them were contacted by their dealers within a few days and an estimated 75 percent of GX vehicles have already been updated. In the process, they're providing free loaner vehicles, remote repairs, pick-up and delivery service, and fueling and washing customer cars.

Since it was launched more than 20 years ago, Lexus has built its reputation on customer respect and concern for safety. When Consumer Reports announced on April 13 that the 2010 GX 460 did not pass their 'Throttle Lift-Off' test, we immediately stopped selling the vehicle and commenced a vigorous investigation. Thanks to the quick response and hard work by our engineers, we were able to identify and address the issue in just about two weeks. This is our assurance to Lexus customers that their safety and satisfaction are our top priorities.

As previously announced, we will continue to provide a courtesy vehicle to anyone who has purchased a 2010 GX 460 and has concerns about driving it until the recall work has been completed.

Customers who have any questions or concerns should contact their local Lexus dealer or Lexus Customer Satisfaction at 1-800-25LEXUS or 1-800-255-3987.”

Lexus 2010 HS 250h Voluntary Safety Recall

On February 8, 2010, Lexus announced a voluntary safety recall of its 2010 HS 250h vehicles. Some owners have reported experiencing inconsistent brake feel during slow and steady application of the brakes on rough or slick road surfaces when the anti-lock brake system (ABS) is activated in an effort to maintain tire traction.

While this issue is rare, should you experience it with your vehicle, press firmly on the brake pedal to stop the vehicle safely.

Below you'll find answers to some of your questions.

1. What is the condition with the Lexus HS 250h?

Some owners may experience inconsistent brake feel during slow and steady application of the brakes on rough or slick road surfaces when the ABS is activated in an effort to maintain tire traction.

2. How is Lexus responding to this issue?

Owners were notified by first-class mail beginning in late February that Lexus dealers will install a newly designed software update (reflash) to the ABS Actuator Electronic Control Unit (ECU) at no charge to the vehicle owner. Vehicles already built and in-stock have all been updated.

3. How many vehicles are covered by this recall?

This recall involves approximately 14,550 MY 2010 HS 250h vehicles sold from May through December 2009 in the U.S.

4. What should Lexus HS 250h customers do if they experience this braking issue?

This condition only occurs momentarily during light pedal application at the moment the ABS system begins to activate. If a Lexus HS 250h owner were to experience this condition, they should firmly and steadily apply additional force to the brake pedal.

5. Are these vehicles safe to drive until they get their update?

You can continue to drive your vehicle because pressing firmly on the brake pedal will safely stop the vehicle. Lexus encourages you to contact a dealer promptly to obtain the new software.

6. When can I get my vehicle fixed?

Owners were notified by first-class mail beginning in late February and are encouraged to contact their dealer to schedule an appointment to have the remedy completed at their earliest convenience.

7. How long will it take for a dealer to repair my vehicle?

The software update should only take approximately 30 minutes to install depending on technician workload.

8. Is the repair covered by warranty? Will drivers have to pay any money out of pocket for this work?

The recall remedy will be provided at NO CHARGE.

9. Have any production changes been implemented on the HS 250h?

A production change was made to the ABS Actuator ECU in late February 2010.

10. Where can I get more information on this recall?

Owners with questions or concerns can contact their local Lexus dealer for diagnosis, and if applicable, repair. Lexus customers can also contact the Lexus Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-255-3987, Monday through Friday, 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., or Saturday 7:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.

Pedal Entrapment Recall

To address the potential risk for floor mat entrapment of accelerator pedals in certain Lexus models, Lexus is conducting a safety recall of those models. A consumer safety advisory was issued on September 29, 2009, with respect to this issue.

Lexus Models involved in the pedal entrapment recall:
Certain 2006 – 2010 IS Vehicles
2007 – 2010 ES

1. What is the condition that has prompted this recall?

There is the potential for an unsecured or incompatible driver's floor mat to interfere with, or entrap, the accelerator pedal, in the worst case, in the wide-open position.

2. What is Lexus going to do?

For the involved ES vehicles, the remedy is as follows:

The remedy will entail modification to both the accelerator pedal and the floor surface in the driver's footwell.

For the involved IS vehicles, the remedy is as follows:

The accelerator pedal foot pad will be replaced with a newly designed one.

For both the ES and IS vehicles:

If the vehicle is equipped with a set of optional genuine Lexus All-Weather Floor Mats (AWFM), it will be inspected to determine if the AWFM set is of an older design. If it is, the older design AWFMs for the driver and the front-seat passenger will be replaced with newly designed ones.

As an additional measure independent of the vehicle-based recall remedy, Lexus will install a newly designed override system on ES and IS vehicles to provide an extra measure of consumer confidence. This system will cut engine power in case of simultaneous application of both accelerator and brake pedals at certain speeds and driving conditions.

Lexus requests that customers take out any removable driver's floor mat, place it in the trunk, and NOT replace it with any other floor mat until the Safety Recall remedy has been implemented on the vehicle.

3. What should customers do if their vehicle is involved in this phase of the Safety Recall, but they haven't received their owner letter?

Lexus has completed the mailing of Safety Recall Notices to certain 2007 – 2010 ES owners. Subsequent renotifications, utilizing new State Department of Motor Vehicle Records, will be sent to those owners that have not had the recall remedy performed on their vehicle. Lexus began mailing Safety Recall Notices by first-class mail to 2006 through certain 2010 model year Lexus IS owners in mid-April. The owner letters will be spread over several months consistent with parts supply and repair capacity. We thank our customers for their patience as we continue to mail the letters.

Lexus requests that customers take out any removable driver's floor mat, place it in the trunk, and NOT replace it with any other floor mat until the Safety Recall remedy has been implemented on the vehicle. In the event a customer chooses not to take out the removable floor mat, Lexus strongly recommends that the customer ensure that the correct floor mat is being used, that it is properly installed and secured, that it is not flipped over with the bottom-side up, and that one floor mat is not stacked over another.

4. What is the function of the "brake override system"?

Although an owner might never experience its operation, this braking system enhancement will automatically reduce engine power when the brake pedal and accelerator pedal are applied simultaneously under certain driving conditions.

The Brake Override System operates when these conditions are met:

a) The throttle opening is greater than 1/3

b) Vehicle speed is above 5 mph

c) Brakes are applied firmly

d) The accelerator pedal is applied before the brake pedal

5. Is Lexus implementing the brake override system because there is an electronic control unit (ECU) defect?

Lexus is confident that no defect exists in the ECU that will lead to (or cause) unintended acceleration. Independent of the vehicle-based remedy, Lexus will install a brake override system in the involved Lexus ES and IS models to provide an extra measure of consumer confidence.

6. What is the likelihood that my vehicle will experience this condition?

Pedal entrapment can occur in vehicles in which the driver's floor mat is not compatible with the vehicle and/or is not properly installed and secured.

As a precaution, to help reduce the risk of incorrect floor mat installation and/or application, Lexus requests that customers take out any removable driver's floor mat and NOT replace it with any other floor mat until the safety recall remedy has been completed on the vehicle.

After the recall remedy has been completed, only floor mats designed specifically for the vehicle, and which are properly secured, should be installed on the driver's floor.

7. What should I do if I experience floor mat pedal entrapment while driving?

Should the vehicle continue to accelerate rapidly after releasing the accelerator pedal, this could be an indication of floor mat interference. If this occurs, Lexus recommends the driver take the following actions:

  • First, if it is possible and safe to do so, pull back the floor mat and dislodge it from the accelerator pedal; then pull over and stop the vehicle.
  • If the floor mat cannot be dislodged, then firmly and steadily step on the brake pedal with both feet. Do NOT pump the brake pedal repeatedly as this will increase the effort required to slow the vehicle.
  • Shift the transmission gear selector to the Neutral (N) position and use the brakes to make a controlled stop at the side of the road; turn off the engine.
  • As a last resort, turn off the engine. If your vehicle is equipped with an Engine Start/Stop button, firmly and steadily push the button for at least three seconds to turn off the engine. Do NOT tap the Engine Start/Stop button. This will not cause loss of steering or brake control, but the power assist to these systems will be lost.

8. What if I don't want to remove my floor mat?

Lexus recommends that customers take out any removable driver's floor mat, place it in the trunk, and NOT replace it with any other floor mat until the Safety Recall remedy has been implemented on the vehicle. In the event a customer chooses not to take out the removable floor mat, Lexus strongly recommends that the customer ensure that the correct floor mat is being used, that it is properly installed and secured, that it is not flipped over with the bottom-side up, and that one floor mat is not stacked over another. Please visit www.lexus.com/floormats for additional information.

9. Are the all-weather floor mats being replaced in involved vehicles?

Yes. Lexus will be replacing the driver's and front passenger's all-weather floor mats.

10. Is Lexus recalling the old style all-weather floor mats, and what are you doing with them?

Yes, Lexus is recalling the old style all-weather floor mats as part of this recall to attempt to completely remove them from the market. At some point in time in the future, these mats will be recycled into other products such as road surfaces. Lexus has not completed the details of the recycling actions.

11. Where can I get more information on this recall?

Owners with questions or concerns are asked to please contact the Lexus Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-255-3987, Monday through Friday, 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. or Saturday 7:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
